25-minute group activity

For a class, a bank trainee study circle or a small online study group. The group leader only needs this page and the free diagnostic.

MINUTES 0–3

Set the goal

Ask everyone to pick one topic they find difficult: suitability, risk and return, fund costs or basic calculations.

MINUTES 3–13

10-question diagnostic

Each person answers 10 scored practice questions independently. The free checkpoint shows correct answers out of 10; it is not a prediction of the official score.

MINUTES 13–20

Discuss the reasoning

Compare why each distractor is tempting, note two recurring mistakes, and review the test's explanations and exam traps.

MINUTES 20–25

Do one calculation together

Choose an example below, ask participants to show the formula and units, then assign the remaining free questions for follow-up.

Three worked calculation prompts

These are original practice exercises for teaching and discussion. Tap each solution to check the arithmetic.

1. Mutual fund net asset value

A fund has assets of $5,200,000, liabilities of $200,000, and 250,000 units outstanding. What is the NAV per unit?

Show solution

Net assets = $5,200,000 − $200,000 = $5,000,000. NAV per unit = $5,000,000 ÷ 250,000 = $20.00 per unit.

2. Holding-period return

An investor buys units at $18.50, sells at $20.00, and receives $0.40 per unit in distributions. What is the simple holding-period return?

Show solution

(Ending value − beginning value + distributions) ÷ beginning value = ($20.00 − $18.50 + $0.40) ÷ $18.50 = 10.27%, approximately.

3. Weighted portfolio return

A portfolio is 70% equities and 30% bonds. Equities fall 8% and bonds rise 3%. Ignoring fees and rebalancing, what is the return?

Show solution

(0.70 × −8%) + (0.30 × 3%) = −5.6% + 0.9% = −4.7%.

What this kit is — and isn't

It is a free, independently created revision activity. It is not an official exam, a certification, a passing-score guarantee or a substitute for your required course materials. For current exam rules, use the Canadian Securities Institute's IFC exam and credits page.
